Motherwort ordinary or cardiac (nettles are deaf, nettle wild, core, heart grass) - this perennial plant from the family Yakovtotkovye. Distributed in Europe (Middle and Eastern), the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, China, Mongolia and Asia Minor. I was brought to North America. It grows in Ukraine and Belarus, the Baltic states, in Russia it is most often found in the European and southern parts.
The native land of the plant is Asia. In Europe, the "heart healer" was brought very long ago, where the species was successfully naturalized. However, the ubiquitous distribution was not received due to the fact that the places of life of the motherwort coincide with the more competitive Rhodian Krapiv. Previously, the plant was planted near housing, monasteries, collected and made from it medicinal drugs. Today it is cultivated on an industrial scale and is harvested for the production of medicinal raw materials.
It refers to weed plants and quickly seizes free territories, where, in the absence of competition and under good conditions, forms extensive thickets. It prefers places along roads, dwellings, grows in rare forests, in ravines, abandoned open-cast mines, on slopes and wastelands, is often found among the grasses of private front gardens, less often inhabits the coasts of rivers. Prefers clay and sandy soils rich in nitrogen.
The healing properties and contraindications of the cardiac wasteland have been studied quite well, therefore the plant is actively used in folk and official medicine. Also five-lobed and bluish kinds of a core possess pharmacological activity, but more often folk healers use precisely warm grass.
It reaches heights of up to 2 m (usually 50-150 cm), has a straight tetrahedral stem, branching at the top. Outside the inflorescence, the stem is bare or pubescent in the corners with pressed hairs. One plant has several stems.
The leaves have petioles and are painted in a dark green color. Above and below the shoots, the leaves are not the same: the upper oblong-rhombic forms are whole, the lower five or three-parted ones are incised up to half, they have wide wedge-shaped portions with large-toothed edges of different sizes.
The flowers are zygomorphic and collected in false multifloral whorls in the sinuses of the upper leaves. The whorls form an intermittent long apical inflorescence in the form of a spikelet. Calyx naked, about 8 mm long, has a pronounced tube and consists of 5 prongs that end with a prickly point. The two lower teeth are larger and bent downward. Corolla five-membered, has a violet-pink or pink color, and the size is more than a cup. The petals are soldered.
Inside the corolla tube is a hairy oblique ring. Upper lip with integral margin, elliptical in shape, densely shaggy and slightly concave. The lower lip has well developed lateral lobes. Under the upper lip, 4 fertile stamens are collected - the upper ones are shorter than the lower ones. Anthers introrrhiznye. There is 1 pestle, with the upper ovary, represented by two carpels, which form false septa as it matures, and the gene becomes four-membered. The stigma with two equal lobes is located on top of the column. Blooms all summer.
Fractional fruit consists of 4 nuts, which after maturation have olive green color and trihedral pyramidal shape, with hairs on the top. Matures unevenly, from July to August. Seeds are highly viable: germination lasts up to 9 years.
The plant is rich in pharmacologically active substances, among which:
- alkaloids (leonurin, stachidrine, leonurinin);
- iridoidy (8-acetylarpagid, galliridoside, ayugol, ayugozid, harpagid);
- flavonoids (rutin, cosmosin, quinqueloside, quercetin, hyperoside);
- traces of essential oil (in the composition - limonene, karyofilen, linalool, α-humulen, α- and β-pinene);
- amine stachidrine;
- organic acids (tartaric, P-coumarinic, malic, vanillic, ursolic, lemon);
- vitamins E, C and A;
- micro- and macro elements.
Collection and Procurement
For the subsequent harvesting, the entire apical part is collected together with the flowers. The optimal period is the full flowering of the plant, when the petals are opened, most often this is July. For collection choose dry and sunny weather. Side shoots with a stem are cut with scissors - the blank should be about 40 cm long and not thicker than 5 mm.
Raw materials are laid out in a thin layer on clean paper and dried in natural conditions (in attics, verandas). During drying, the raw material must be turned over. Finished raw materials break with a characteristic crunch. Store in canvas bags in a dry place for 3 years.
History and application in different countries
In Tibetan medicine the herb of the plant is used for about 2 thousand years. In countries of modern Europe among the population, wild nettle began to be used from the 10th century. In medieval medical treatises, cardiac grass was used from "heart beat and" gravity in the stomach ", also used for lung diseases and as a soothing agent. The plant was mentioned in the official European herbalists as early as the 15th century, having received universal recognition in the 19th century.
In folk medicine, the first written references to the pharmaceutical effects of motherwort belong to 1485. Since 1930, the motherwort became the main competitor of valerian in the treatment of heart disease, and also began to be used as a sedative.
- Bulgarians use a plant to stop convulsions in the treatment of neuroses, as well as a diuretic, anti-tuberculosis drug.
- In the Czech Republic and Romania, the plant is used to treat tachycardia and heart pain, with epilepsy and Graves' disease.
- In Ukraine, the plant is used to treat rheumatism, fright, menstrual irregularities, bronchial asthma, cardiac and pulmonary edema.
- In England, tincture of a plant is traditionally prescribed to people with weakness of the heart muscle and diseases of a neurological nature, especially those suffering from hysteria.
- Almost every US citizen in the medicine cabinet has a motherwort tincture, which is used as a cardiac and sedative.
In Russia and Belarus core preparations are mainly used as cardiotonic and sedatives. In clinical trials positive dynamics in patients with hypertension, cardiosclerosis, angina, cardioneurosis, myocarditis in course treatment was revealed. However, the greatest effectiveness can be achieved in the treatment of pathologies in the early stages of development and with prolonged use of the motherwort (with interruptions). Phytotherapy is not capable of 100% replacement of chemical pharmaceutical preparations, but it allows to reduce the dosage of the latter and, accordingly, to reduce the drug load on patients.
Useful properties of the core
The medicinal properties of the herb Leonurus are diverse. Among the most significant effects on the body are:
- Hypotensive effect: the core is an excellent phytopreparation for the normalization of blood pressure and allows you to reduce the doses of chemically synthesized antihypertensive drugs;
- Cardiotonic, with normalization of the heart rhythm: mild stimulation of the heart muscle with an increase in the amplitude of cardiac contractions and a decrease in their frequency;
- Spasmolytic and vasodilating effects. It leads to the expansion of coronary vessels and increased access of oxygen to the organ.
- Expressed sedative effect: eliminates nervous excitability, improves overall well-being and normalizes sleep.
- Hormone-regulating. Normalizes the menstrual cycle, relieves the symptoms characteristic of menopause.
- Anti-edema and diuretic.
In addition, plant preparations improve metabolism: normalize carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, normalize the level of glucose, total fats, cholesterol, pyruvic and lactic acids in the blood.
On a number of indices, tincture based on a plant is more effective than tinctures of valerian and hawthorn, traditionally used for the treatment of the heart, and has fewer side effects. But the therapeutic effect in the treatment of the motherwort occurs slowly, and most people prefer even stronger drugs, but quick-acting, which is not always justified.
Among the indications for the treatment of plant drugs:
- neurosis cardiovascular, neurasthenia, psychasthenia;
- overexcitation of the central nervous system, fright;
- headache associated with nervous overload;
- multiple sclerosis;
- diseases of blood vessels and heart: angina pectoris, myocarditis, cardiosclerosis, arrhythmia;
- hypertension in the early stages;
- poisoning with the development of myocardiopathy;
- spasms of the gastrointestinal tract;
- inflammatory bowel disease;
- edema of various genesis;
- bronchial asthma;
- Graves disease;
- uterine bleeding;
- climacteric syndrome;
- convulsions (as drugs to enhance the action of anticonvulsant drugs).
